Why did the scholarship deadline get moved to June 1st?
The situation with COVID-19 presented several issues. We were aware that scholarship applicants may have a difficult time getting references completed due to school closures. Social distancing and shelter in place orders required the PCNA office to close. Nurses who serve on our scholarship committee would not be able to meet to review applications and finalize decisions. Due to all of these considerations and with the cancelation of the Nurses Week Banquet on May 8th, we decided to give everyone additional time to submit and process scholarship applications.
When will scholarships be reviewed? When will applicants be notified?
The Scholarship Committee meets the first week of April to review all applications and select recipients. This allows us to notify winners in advance of the banquet in May.
Due to the COVID-19 situation, we anticipate that the scholarship committee will meet at the beginning of June and applicants will be notified by mid-June.
When will scholarship checks be mailed?
Scholarship checks are mailed directly to schools in June. While the selection of recipients is delayed this year, we still anticipate mailing checks to schools by the end of June.
Do I need to send official transcripts?
An official transcript is not needed, an unofficial transcript is sufficient.
Do you have a form for my references to complete?
Yes, beginning in 2020. Please have your references use our recommendation form. https://piercecountynurses.com/scholarships/
Should I send in the recommendation forms with my application or separate?
We typically ask that applicants collect the completed recommendation forms and mail them in with their application. With schools closed, we know this mail may be difficult. This year, references may be sent directly by the person completing the form. They can be mailed to the office at PCNA 223 Tacoma Avenue South Tacoma, WA 98402 or emailed to us at email@example.com.
If I’m a past PCNA scholarship recipient, can I apply again?
Nursing students are eligible to receive a PCNA scholarship award once every other year. If you didn’t receive a PCNA scholarship last year, you are welcome to apply.
I’m a graduating high school senior but I’ve been accepted to a nursing program. Should I apply for a high school level scholarship or a college level scholarship?
You are welcome to submit an application for both scholarships. Please submit two complete application packets. Your applications will be reviewed as part of each level but a student will only receive one scholarship from PCNA.
How can I deliver my application?
The best option is to have it postmarked by the due date and mailed to our office. If you would like to hand-deliver it, you can drop it off by slipping it through the mail slot. The PCNA office is located in the basement of the Pierce County Medical Society building at 223 Tacoma Avenue South Tacoma, WA 98402. Deliver by slipping in the mailslot next to the main entrance to the building. Must be received at the office on Monday, June 1, 2020. We do not accept faxes or electronically submitted applications.
If I am awarded the scholarship, when can I start using the money?
The funds will be sent to your school in June. If any information regarding the school has changed between submitting the application and June, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to ensure we have the correct information. While the deadline change in 2020 will impact when applicants are notified, we are still planning to mail out scholarship checks by the end of June.
When will I hear back about the scholarship?
We will notify you in early
April June by email or mail after the Scholarship Committee has made their decisions.
